About The Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales Animals List
Criteria for including an animal
I chose to include an animal only when it has an active role in the fairy tale. The easiest way to explain this is with this table:
excluded from the list | included in the list |
a horse that is only used as transportation | a horse that is killed or speaks |
a fox who just happens to be part of the scenery | a fox that plays an active role in the fairy tale |
Bird / Raven
In a lot of fairy tales you’ll find a ‘bird’. But what kind of bird? Nobody knows. In other fairy tales the kind of bird is mentioned (a raven, a chicken, a pigeon etc.)
To not overly complicate the list I have chosen to include fairy tales only under one heading. So ‘bird’ only under ‘bird’, chicken only under ‘chicken’, raven only under ‘raven’ etc.
Rooster / Hen / Chicken
In some fairy tales you’ll find a rooster, in others a hen. In this list I have chosen not to include the animals by gender. So the fairy tales with a rooster you find only under the heading ‘chicken’, and the fairy tales with a hen you also find only under the heading ‘chicken’.
Roe buck / Roe deer / Deer
I made some judgement calls. There is a fairy tale with a ‘roe buck’. It could be listed under ‘roe deer’ but I chose the bigger family of ‘deer’.
Work in progress
This list is a work in progress. Right now it is 42% finished. As I keep adding more of the Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales, it automatically updates itself.
